If I had a nickel for every time someone told me, “Sebastian, I’ve setup my business on social media but I’m not getting anywhere!” – I’d have at least 25 cents. Social media marketing isn’t always easy. Sure, if you have a product like Easy Lunch Boxes or Squatty Potty, it may be a bit easier but that’s because these types of products are unique, targeted and shareable – the perfect mix for social. Sadly, not everyone has figured out a way for people to #PoopLikeRoyalty so we have to figure out another way to get people to engage with and follow our social media.
That’s where this list comes in. Move your level of expertise from beginner to expert with these simple, short, one-line social media tips for all social media and specifically Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram.
All Social Media
- Use recommended sizes for post, profile and cover photos.
- Turn on in-app notifications for all business pages so you can keep up with engagement and messages on your profiles.
- Update the “About” section of your social media business pages to include a link back to your website.
- Deliver content on a consistent basis (at least 3-5x per week).
- Develop a social media marketing plan for 3, 6 and 12 months ahead.
Facebook
- When sharing a link, upload an image of your choosing to be included with the link instead of the default one made available. – Facebook & LinkedIn
- Use the “About” section in your personal social media profiles to link to your business social media profiles. – Facebook & LinkedIn
- When another business page @mentions you, reply with your business account, not your personal one.
- Use Facebook Ad Manager to setup your ads instead of hitting the “Boost” button on posts, there are more options available in the Ads Manger.
- Try to include less than 20% text in your Facebook ad – the less text the ad has, the more views it gets.
Twitter
- Don’t start your tweet by @mentioning someone – by default it won’t appear in your Followers news feeds, it will only appear for that one Follower.
- Try to keep plain-text between #hashtags and links.
- Use “Quote Tweet” instead of “Retweet” so you can add a comment prior to posting in your feed.
- Tweets allow for up to 4 photos to be attached.
- Tweet using a top trending #hashtag but be sure to relate it to your business.
LinkedIn
- Don’t forget to update your “Headline” when you change jobs.
- Don’t use #hashtags on LinkedIn, they don’t work.
- Change the contact email on your personal LinkedIn to a business email.
- Use your personal profile for personal branding and setup a company page for small business branding.
Instagram
- Try to avoid sharing text-based photos on Instagram, people expect to see high-end photography.
- If you don’t want the “…more” text to appear, keep your caption under 140 characters with spaces.
- Download the Layout App to create photo collages and the Boomerang App to create short “repeat” videos.
- Use “Stories” to take your Followers behind-the-scenes of a product launch, meeting or service process.
- Posts have a character limit of 2,200 with spaces.
